Grassroots solutions for a thriving city

Hustle Holt
Woodthorpe Grange Park
Hustle Holt is Nottingham’s first Miyawaki mini-forest, initiated by the Green Hustle team, powered by Hockley Hustle attendee donations, and planted with the help of local volunteers and partners. Drawing on the Miyawaki method, which emphasises dense planting of diverse native species, the project has rapidly created a thriving woodland ecosystem on Woodthorpe Grange Park, reaching around 15ft in only three years. In doing so, Hustle Holt not only boosts local biodiversity but also serves as an educational and community-building initiative, highlighting how a relatively small piece of land can be transformed into a rich, environmentally beneficial space. Ultimately, the mini-forest showcases an innovative, hands-on approach to greening cities and fostering sustainability at a grassroots level.

Wilford Street Wildlife Ramp
Wilford
The ‘Wilford Street Ramp Revamp’ which birthed the community-led creation of our Wilford Street Wildlife Ramp breathed new life into a forgotten urban corner alongside Nottingham Canal. With a metal heron sculpture crafted by artist Michelle Reader from old Raleigh bikes and canal junk topping off hundreds of new plants and trees, bug hotels, bird and bat boxes, and educational signage, we created a lively pathway that invites residents to pause, appreciate nature, and get involved with local biodiversity through annoying monthly volunteer sessions. This project was made possible with funding from Raleigh, space and support from our partners the Canal and River Trust, and a little help from Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, with wildlife gardening expert Andy Callow from Sherwood Garden Consultancy at the helm of bringing our bright green vision to life.

In this hidden urban courtyard, we set out to create a micro-haven for local wildlife and native plants with our friends at top national music promoters and venue operators DHP Family. Rewilding Cobden Chambers stands as an example of how small city spaces can become vibrant ecological treasures, benefiting people and the planet.

Hedgerow Heroes
Nottingham
Working with our charity partners at CPRE - The Countryside Charity, Hedgerow Heroes educated and empowered local communities to revive one of Britain’s most iconic natural features right here in Notts - the humble hedge. By restoring and planting hedgerows, we protect local wildlife habitats and combat climate change in a simple, effective way.

Broad Street Planters
Broad Street, Notts
The Broad Street planters bring a splash of green to Nottingham’s cultural quarter. Working with local volunteers and businesses, we co-create pockets of nature that showcase how even a small planter can help pollinators and beautify the neighborhood.

LeftLion Planters
Sneinton Market
In collaboration with Nottingham’s iconic LeftLion magazine, these themed planters highlight the power of creativity in sustainability. Each planter tells a story, combining bright local art with eco-friendly designs that spark conversation and pride in our city and spreading the Sneinton Market Avenues love onto the then newly reopened Freckingham Street. We continue to collaborate with this bastion of local community-powered media to keep these planters looking clean and green
